KRT16은 케라틴 유전자군의 구성원으로, 상피세포의 구조적 안정성을 담당하는 중간 필라멘트 단백질입니다. 케라틴은 세포질 케라틴과 모발 케라틴으로 구분되며, 대부분의 Type I 세포질 케라틴은 산성 단백질로 구성되어 있습니다. KRT16은 식도, 혀, 모낭 등 다양한 상피 조직에서 케라틴 14와 함께 발현됩니다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 Type 1 Pachyonychia Congenita, Non-epidermolytic Palmoplantar Keratoderma 및 Unilateral Palmoplantar Verrucous Nevus와 관련이 있습니다.
