Target Information
The proteasome is a multicatalytic proteinase complex with a highly ordered ring-shaped 20S core structure. The core structure consists of four rings of 28 non-identical subunits; two rings are composed of seven alpha subunits and two rings of seven beta subunits. Proteasomes are abundant in eukaryotic cells and function in an ATP/ubiquitin-dependent, non-lysosomal pathway. The immunoproteasome variant processes class I MHC peptides.
This gene encodes a member of the proteasome B-type (T1B) family, a 20S core beta subunit. Expression is downregulated by gamma interferon, and proteolytic processing is required for maturation. This subunit is absent in the immunoproteasome and replaced by catalytic subunit 2i (proteasome beta 10 subunit).
