Target Information
Caveolae are specialized plasma membrane domains involved in the sequestration of various lipid and protein molecules. These structures play roles in lipid metabolism, growth regulation, signal transduction, and apoptosis. Caveolin interacts with and regulates heterotrimeric G-proteins.
There are three known members of the caveolin multigene family encoding 21–24 kDa integral membrane proteins that form the major structural component of caveolae.
Caveolin-2 is abundantly expressed in fibroblasts, differentiated adipocytes, smooth and skeletal muscle, and endothelial cells. Its expression pattern is similar to caveolin-1, whereas caveolin-3 is mainly expressed in muscle tissues.
