HHV8는 AIDS 환자에서 관찰되는 세 가지 질환 — 카포시 육종(Kaposi’s sarcoma), 체강을 침범하는 희귀 비호지킨 림프종인 원발성 삼출 림프종(primary effusion lymphoma), 그리고 다중심성 캐슬만병(multicentric Castleman’s disease) — 과 관련이 있습니다. 현재까지 HHV8가 카포시 육종의 발생에 직접적인 역할을 한다는 많은 증거가 보고되었습니다.
