Target Information

CD14 is a 55 kDa GPI-anchored glycoprotein expressed on the surface of mature monocytes, macrophages, and neutrophils. It functions as a multifunctional lipopolysaccharide receptor and is released into serum as both secreted and enzymatically cleaved forms. CD14 binds lipopolysaccharides in a reaction catalyzed by lipopolysaccharide-binding protein (LBP). The soluble form (sCD14) discriminates structural differences among lipopolysaccharides and plays a role in neutralizing serum lipopolysaccharides. CD14 also binds apoptotic cells and influences allergic, inflammatory, and infectious processes. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding the same isoform. Diseases associated with CD14 dysfunction include Mycobacterium chelonae infection and Croup.
