Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and facilitate protein synthesis within mitochondria. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes where this ratio is reversed. Prokaryotic ribosomes contain a 5S rRNA, which is absent in mammalian mitoribosomes. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary significantly among species, often differing in sequence and biochemical properties, making homology-based recognition difficult. The MRPL52 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein with no bacterial homolog, and multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
