Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and function in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA ratio, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes. Mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA, and their protein components vary significantly among species, hindering recognition by sequence homology. The MRPL34 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein.
