Target Information

Dystroglycan is a laminin-binding component of the dystrophin–glycoprotein complex, providing a structural link between the subsarcolemmal cytoskeleton and the extracellular matrix.
Dystroglycan 1 is a candidate gene for mutations in autosomal recessive muscular dystrophies.
Reduction of dystroglycan 1 in Duchenne muscular dystrophy disrupts sarcolemma–matrix linkage, increasing muscle fiber susceptibility to necrosis.
It also acts as a dual receptor for agrin and laminin-2 in Schwann cell membranes.
Muscle and nonmuscle isoforms differ by carbohydrate composition, not protein sequence.
Alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants encoding the same protein.
