Target Information
Aldh3A1 belongs to the aldehyde dehydrogenase superfamily, a group of NAD(P)(+)-dependent enzymes that catalyze oxidation of a wide range of aldehydes. It is highly expressed in the stomach and cornea, comprising up to 50% of the water-soluble protein fraction in mammalian corneas. Aldh3A1 is thought to protect the cornea from UV-induced oxidative stress by detoxifying reactive aldehydes and absorbing UV energy. Studies show that Aldh1A1 may compensate for Aldh3A1 loss, as double knockout mice (Aldh3A1-/-, Aldh1A1-/-) exhibit increased cataract formation following UVB exposure.
