Target Information
The PEX26 gene belongs to the peroxin-26 family and is required for protein import into peroxisomes. It anchors PEX1 and PEX6 to peroxisome membranes, possibly forming heteromeric AAA ATPase complexes essential for protein import.
Defects in this gene cause peroxisome biogenesis disorder complementation group 8 (PBD8), associated with disorders such as:
- Zellweger syndrome
- Neonatal adrenoleukodystrophy
- Infantile Refsum disease
- Classical rhizomelic chondrodysplasia punctata
Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been identified for this gene.
