Target Information

The ATP1B1 gene encodes a beta 1 subunit of the Na⁺/K⁺-ATPase, an integral membrane protein essential for maintaining electrochemical gradients of sodium and potassium ions across the plasma membrane. These gradients are critical for osmoregulation, sodium-coupled transport of various molecules, and electrical excitability of nerve and muscle cells. The enzyme consists of a large catalytic alpha subunit and a smaller glycoprotein beta subunit, which regulates the number of sodium pumps at the plasma membrane through alpha/beta heterodimer assembly. Multiple genes encode the glycoprotein subunit, and alternatively spliced transcript variants exist, though their biological significance is uncertain.
