Target Information
GRK1 is a member of the guanine nucleotide-binding protein (G protein)-coupled receptor kinase subfamily of Ser/Thr protein kinases.
It mediates rapid desensitization of rod photoreceptors to light by catalyzing phosphorylation of rhodopsin, leading to its deactivation.
Defects in GRK1 are associated with Oguchi disease type 2 (stationary night blindness).
GRK1 can be phosphorylated by PKA, which reduces its ability to phosphorylate rhodopsin in vitro.
Phosphorylation by PKA in vivo is speculated to occur in the dark when cAMP levels in photoreceptor cells are elevated.
