Target Information
Ferritin is the major intracellular iron storage protein in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. It is composed of 24 subunits of heavy (H) and light (L) chains, forming a holoenzyme shell of about 450 kDa capable of storing up to 4,500 atoms of ferric iron. Variations in subunit composition can affect iron uptake and release rates across tissues. Defects in ferritin light chain genes are linked to neurodegenerative diseases and hyperferritinemia-cataract syndrome. Ferritin is ubiquitous and highly conserved, playing a central role in iron homeostasis.
