Product Specific Information

This antibody reacts very strongly with most carcinomas and occasionally shows weak cross-reactivity with sarcomas and leukemias. It reacts with colorectal carcinomas and does not react with normal intestine or colorectal adenomas.

Target Information

MUC1 (Mucin 1, Episialin, MAM-6, CA 15-3, PEM, and EMA) is a large cell surface mucin glycoprotein expressed by most glandular and ductal epithelial cells and some hematopoietic cell lineages. It is a transmembrane glycoprotein with a large extracellular domain that undergoes proteolysis and extensive O-linked glycosylation.
MUC1 is highly polymorphic, with alleles encoding variable repeat numbers (30–90), resulting in size variation. It is abundantly expressed in >90% of breast carcinomas and metastases. Transgenic MUC1 associates with all four erbB receptors and localizes with erbB1 (EGFR) in lactating glands.
The MUC1 gene contains seven exons and produces several alternatively spliced variants. Overexpression, aberrant localization, and altered glycosylation are associated with carcinomas. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been reported; only some full-length forms are known.
