Target Information

The serum amyloid A (SAA) family comprises several differentially expressed apolipoproteins, including acute-phase SAA1 and SAA2, with SAA1 being the major plasma component. Although primarily synthesized in the liver, extrahepatic production has also been reported. In vivo concentrations can increase up to 1000-fold during inflammation.

SAA plays a significant role in the diagnosis and monitoring of various diseases. Pathological SAA levels are often detected even when CRP concentrations are normal; SAA rises earlier and more sharply than CRP. Recent studies have expanded understanding of SAA expression and function.
