Target Information

Calmodulin mediates the control of a large number of enzymes, ion channels, aquaporins, and other proteins by Ca²⁺. It forms a complex with Ca²⁺ to stimulate several protein kinases and phosphatases. Calmodulin, together with CCP110 and centrin, participates in regulating the centrosome cycle and cytokinesis.

Calmodulin is a small, highly conserved calcium-binding protein found in all eukaryotic cells. It binds up to four calcium ions, functioning as an intracellular receptor for calcium signals. Upon calcium binding, it undergoes conformational changes that enhance affinity for target proteins. Calmodulin regulates processes including metabolism, motility, exocytosis, cytoskeletal assembly, and intracellular modulation of cAMP and calcium levels.

This 17 kDa protein contains 149 amino acids and four calcium-binding domains. It plays roles in growth, cell cycle regulation, signal transduction, and neurotransmitter synthesis and release.
