Target Information
TNF alpha is a multifunctional proinflammatory cytokine belonging to the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) superfamily. It is mainly secreted by macrophages and binds to receptors TNFRSF1A/TNFR1 and TNFRSF1B/TNFBR. TNF alpha regulates immune cells, cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, lipid metabolism, and coagulation.
It exists as multimers (two to five noncovalently linked units) and shows a single 17 kDa band on SDS-PAGE under non-reducing conditions. Knockout studies indicate neuroprotective functions and tumor necrosis activity when injected into tumor-bearing mice. TNF alpha is involved in immune responses to bacterial, viral, parasitic, and fungal infections, as well as in tumor necrosis. It acts synergistically with interferon-gamma in cytotoxicity and is implicated in autoimmune diseases, insulin resistance, and cancer.
