Target Information
This gene encodes coagulation factor VIII, which participates in the intrinsic pathway of blood coagulation. Factor VIII acts as a cofactor for factor IXa, which, in the presence of Ca²⁺ and phospholipids, converts factor X to its activated form Xa.
Two alternatively spliced transcripts are produced:
- Transcript variant 1 (isoform a): Encodes a large glycoprotein circulating in plasma, noncovalently associated with von Willebrand factor.
- Transcript variant 2 (isoform b): Encodes a smaller protein primarily comprising the phospholipid-binding domain essential for coagulant activity.
Defects in this gene cause hemophilia A, a common recessive X-linked coagulation disorder.
