BAF53A는 actin-related protein (ARP) 계열 단백질로, conventional actin과 높은 서열 유사성을 가지며 ATP 결합 홈(actin fold)을 특징으로 합니다. ARP는 세포 내 소포 수송, 방추체 방향성, 핵 이동, 크로마틴 리모델링 등 다양한 세포 과정에 관여합니다.
이 유전자는 포유류의 BAF (BRG1/brm-associated factor) 복합체의 53 kDa 서브유닛 단백질을 암호화하며, 이는 효모와 초파리의 SWI/SNF 복합체와 기능적으로 유사합니다. 이 복합체는 크로마틴 매개 전사 억제를 방해하여 특정 유전자의 전사 활성화를 돕습니다.
β-actin과 함께 BRG1의 ATPase 활성 및 BAF 복합체의 크로마틴 결합에 필수적입니다. 세 가지 전사 변이체가 보고되어 있으며, 두 가지 단백질 아이소폼을 암호화합니다.
