Target Information
The AGT gene encodes pre-angiotensinogen (angiotensinogen precursor), expressed primarily in the liver. It is cleaved by renin in response to lowered blood pressure to produce angiotensin I, which is further converted by angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) into angiotensin II, a physiologically active peptide involved in blood pressure regulation.
This protein plays a key role in:
- Maintaining blood pressure
- Pathogenesis of essential hypertension and preeclampsia
- Associated with renal tubular dysgenesis, atrial fibrillation, and inflammatory bowel disease
