Target Information
Beta-2-microglobulin (B2M) is a 12–14 kDa protein that forms a subunit of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I. It is associated with HLA Class I antigens and expressed on many cell types including lymphocytes, thymocytes, monocytes, granulocytes, platelets, endothelial, and epithelial cells, but absent on erythrocytes.
Beta-2-microglobulin is also found freely in plasma and shares homology with immunoglobulin constant regions. It plays roles in antigen processing, presentation, and TCR signaling in naive CD8+ cells.
Encoded by the B2M gene on chromosome 15, mutations can cause hypercatabolic hypoproteinemia. Levels of beta-2 microglobulin are useful for assessing renal function and as a prognostic marker in HIV infection.
