Target Information
The EGR2 gene encodes the early growth response 2 protein, a transcription factor that binds specific DNA regions to regulate gene expression.
EGR2 activates genes involved in the formation and maintenance of myelin, which insulates and protects nerve cells for efficient impulse transmission.
Mutations in the EGR2 gene are associated with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease types 1D and 4E, and severe congenital hypomyelinating neuropathy (Dejerine-Sottas syndrome).
