Target Information
This gene encodes a member of the serpin superfamily of serine proteinase inhibitors. The protein is primarily secreted by axons in the brain and preferentially inhibits tissue-type plasminogen activator. It plays a role in axonal growth regulation and synaptic plasticity development. Mutations in this gene cause familial encephalopathy with neuroserpin inclusion bodies (FENIB), a dominantly inherited encephalopathy and epilepsy characterized by mutant neuroserpin polymer accumulation. Multiple alternatively spliced variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
