Target Information

The CD4 antigen is involved in the recognition of MHC class II molecules and acts as a co-receptor for HIV. CD4 is primarily expressed in T helper cells but can also be found in monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells.
At the tissue level, CD4 is detected in thymus, lymph nodes, tonsils, spleen, and certain brain and gut regions.
CD4 functions to initiate or augment early T-cell activation via association with the T-cell receptor complex and Lck kinase. It may also mediate neuronal damage in infectious and immune-mediated CNS diseases.
Multiple alternatively spliced transcripts have been identified for this gene.
