DsRed2 retains the benefits typical of red fluorescent proteins, such as a high signal-to-noise ratio and distinct spectral properties for use in multicolor labeling experiments. DsRed2 is a variant of Discosoma sp. red fluorescent protein (drFP583) (Matz et al. 1999) with faster maturation and lower non-specific aggregation.
