Target Information
Neurofilaments (NFs) are intermediate filaments expressed almost exclusively in neuronal cells, particularly in large axons. They consist of three polypeptide chains—NF-M (medium), NF-H (high), and NF-L (light)—that share structural similarity in their coiled-coil core domains but differ in their terminal regions. NF-M’s tail domain mediates interactions critical for axonal architecture. Phosphorylation and O-GlcNAcylation of NF-M regulate its filament formation and function. Antibodies to neurofilament subunits serve as valuable markers for neuronal cells due to their abundance and stability in the nervous system.
