Target Information

This gene encodes a member of the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) cytokine family which acts as a ligand for osteoprotegerin and is a key factor for osteoclast differentiation and activation.
It functions as a dendritic cell survival factor and regulates T cell-dependent immune responses.
Activation of T cells induces expression of this gene, promoting osteoclastogenesis and bone loss.
This protein activates antiapoptotic kinase AKT/PKB through a complex involving SRC kinase and TRAF6, suggesting a role in apoptosis regulation.
Gene disruption in mice results in severe osteopetrosis, lack of osteoclasts, defects in T/B lymphocyte differentiation, and failure to form lobulo-alveolar mammary structures during pregnancy.
Two alternatively spliced transcript variants have been identified.
