Target Information
Human RAP1 is the first identified ortholog of the yeast telomeric protein scRap1, sharing three conserved sequence motifs. HRap1 localizes to telomeres and modulates telomere length via recruitment by TRF2 rather than direct telomere binding. The hRap1 cDNA encodes a 399 amino acid protein (~47 kDa) that does not interact with TRF1.
TRF2, containing a Myb-related DNA-binding motif, binds duplex TTAGGG repeats and localizes to telomeres on metaphase chromosomes. TRF2 helps maintain telomere structure, preventing senescence and apoptosis in certain mammalian cells when inhibited.
