Presenilins are components of the gamma-secretase protein complex, required for intramembranous processing of certain type I transmembrane proteins such as Notch and beta-amyloid precursor protein.
Notch receptor signaling mediates diverse developmental cell fates. Processing of beta-amyloid precursor protein generates neurotoxic amyloid beta peptides, the major component of senile plaques associated with Alzheimer’s disease.
This gene encodes a protein essential for Notch pathway signaling and gamma-secretase activity.
