Target Information
Cytokeratin 19 is part of a subfamily of intermediate filament proteins characterized by remarkable biochemical diversity, represented in human epithelial tissues by at least 20 different polypeptides. Cytokeratins range in molecular weight from 40–68 kDa and have isoelectric points between 4.9–7.8. Individual human cytokeratins are numbered 1 to 20.
Different epithelia typically express distinct cytokeratin patterns that reflect both tissue type and degree of maturation or differentiation. These expression patterns are increasingly used to distinguish epithelial malignancies. Cytokeratin antibodies assist in differential tumor diagnosis through immunohistochemistry and are valuable tools in cytopathology and flow cytometry.
Cytokeratin 19 is not expressed in hepatocytes, making it useful in identifying liver metastases.
