Target Information
Adipose tissue acts as an energy reserve in animals and is tightly regulated in nondomestic species. Adipose cells produce and secrete numerous physiologically important proteins, including lipoprotein lipase (LPL), leptin, Acrp30, resistin, and perilipin.
Perilipin is an intracellular neutral lipid droplet protein that is hormonally regulated and localized exclusively to the surface of lipid droplets. Upon lipolytic stimulation, perilipin is phosphorylated by protein kinase A, leading to inhibition of hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL), which mediates triacylglycerol hydrolysis—the major stored energy form in the body.
Perilipin expression is limited to adipocytes and steroidogenic cells. Two isoforms, Perilipin A and B, are known and are encoded by a single-copy gene resulting from differential splicing events.
