Target Information
BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor) is a neurotrophin family member synthesized as pre-proBDNF, cleaved to proBDNF, and further processed to the mature 14 kDa protein. Both proBDNF and mature BDNF are biologically active and secreted in synaptic vesicles.
BDNF is widely expressed in the central nervous system, promoting neuronal survival, differentiation, and synaptic regulation. It signals primarily through the TrkB receptor and also interacts with the p75-NTR receptor.
Reduced expression of BDNF has been observed in Alzheimer’s and Huntington’s disease, and it plays roles in stress response and mood regulation.
