BAF53A는 actin-related proteins (ARPs) 계열의 단백질로, conventional actin과 유사한 아미노산 서열을 공유합니다. ARPs는 ATP 결합 부위를 포함한 actin fold 구조를 가지며, 소포 수송, 방추체 배열, 핵 이동, 염색질 재구성 등 다양한 세포 과정에 관여합니다.
BAF53A는 포유류의 BAF (BRG1/brm-associated factor) 복합체의 53 kDa 서브유닛 단백질을 암호화하며, 이는 효모와 초파리의 SWI/SNF 복합체와 기능적으로 관련되어 있습니다. 이 복합체는 염색질 매개 전사 억제를 방해하여 특정 유전자의 전사 활성화를 촉진합니다.
또한 β-actin과 함께 BRG1의 최대 ATPase 활성을 위해 필요하며, BAF 복합체가 염색질/매트릭스에 결합하는 데 필수적입니다. 세 가지 전사 변이체가 보고되어 있으며, 두 가지 단백질 아이소폼을 암호화합니다.
