Target Information

Upf1 is a key component of nonsense-mediated decay (NMD), an mRNA surveillance mechanism in eukaryotic cells that degrades mRNAs containing premature termination codons. It functions as an ATP-dependent RNA helicase in the cytoplasm and is a component of cytoplasmic P-bodies. Phosphorylation of Upf1 mediates translation repression associated with NMD, facilitating mRNA accessibility to the decay machinery. Other active components of NMD include Upf2 and Upf3, which exhibit perinuclear and nucleocytoplasmic localization, respectively.
