Target Information
CD16 (FCGR3A) encodes a receptor that recognizes the Fc portion of immunoglobulin G (IgG). It plays roles in:
- Clearance of immune complexes from circulation
- Cellular mediated cytotoxicity
- Enhancement of viral infection
The FCGR3A gene shares high similarity with FCGR3B, located nearby on chromosome 1.
- FCGR3A: Expressed on natural killer (NK) cells as an integral membrane glycoprotein
- FCGR3B: Expressed on polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) via phosphatidylinositol (PI) linkage
Mutations in FCGR3A are associated with:
- Immunodeficiency 20
- Susceptibility to recurrent viral infections
- Systemic lupus erythematosus
- Alloimmune neonatal neutropenia
Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
