Target Information
Smooth Muscle Actin belongs to the actin family of highly conserved proteins involved in cell motility, structure, and integrity.
Alpha, beta, and gamma actin isoforms have been identified:
- Alpha actin: major component of the contractile apparatus
- Beta and gamma actins: regulate cell motility
Smooth muscle actin (α-actin) is found in skeletal muscle and smooth muscle vessel walls, gut wall, myometrium, and myoepithelial cells of breast and salivary glands.
It plays key roles in muscle contraction, cell motility, and cytokinesis through interaction with myosin.
Defects in the smooth muscle actin gene can cause familial thoracic aortic aneurysm type 6.
Alpha-smooth muscle actin is abundant in vascular and visceral smooth muscle cells and appears in stress fibers of fibroblastic cells during wound healing and fibrocontractive diseases.
Multiple alternatively spliced variants have been identified.
