Norgen’s Milk DNA Preservation and Isolation Kit is designed for both preservation of DNA in milk samples at ambient temperature and isolation of high-quality DNA in the lab. The included Preservation Solution allows immediate processing or storage of milk samples for up to 1 month at room temperature before DNA isolation. Extracted genomic DNA from somatic cells and bacteria can be used for biomarker detection, disease diagnosis, and monitoring. The purified DNA is compatible with PCR, Southern blot, sequencing, and microarray analysis.
Milk DNA Preservative
Norgen’s Milk DNA Preservation Solution is an aqueous storage buffer that rapidly lyses cells and preserves DNA from fresh specimens. It prevents microbial growth, inactivates viruses, and allows safe handling and shipping at ambient temperature. Samples can be stored for up to 1 month without detectable DNA degradation.

Ten microlitres of isolated DNA (100 µL elution) were loaded on a 1.2% agarose gel, showing good integrity. DNA yield increased with milk input volume up to 2 mL.

E. coli was spiked into preserved milk, and DNA was isolated using the kit. Two microlitres of DNA were used in a 20 µL qPCR reaction. No PCR inhibition was observed, confirming high DNA quality.

Storage Conditions and Product Stability
- Proteinase K should be stored at -20°C upon arrival and after reconstitution.
- All other solutions should be stored tightly sealed at room temperature.
- Kit is stable for 2 years after shipment.
Storage in Preservation Buffer
- Storage at -20°C is recommended for long-term archival samples. Samples can be stored indefinitely at -70°C.
- Samples can be stored at room temperature (25°C) for up to 1 month without significant DNA degradation.
- DNA can also be isolated from samples stored at 37°C for one week.

Q: The column was clogged. What causes this?
- Centrifugation speed too low or spin time inadequate.
- Sample volume too large (apply ≤1 mL).
- Lysate/Buffer SK mixture not homogeneous (vortex 10–15 sec).
Q: Why is the DNA yield lower than expected?
- Incomplete lysis; increase Proteinase K incubation at 55°C.
- Incomplete elution; ensure centrifugation at 14,000 × g.
- Low DNA content in sample.
- Preservation Solution E not added.
Q: Why is the DNA degraded?
- Preservation Solution E not completely mixed with milk sample.
