Target Information

Transferrins (Tf) are approximately 80 kDa blood plasma glycoproteins synthesized by the liver. They are iron-binding transport proteins capable of binding two Fe(3+) ions in association with an anion, usually bicarbonate. Transferrin is responsible for the transport of iron from absorption and heme degradation sites to storage and utilization sites. It is the primary blood iron transport protein, with about one-third of total transferrin bound to iron under normal conditions. Measurement of blood transferrin levels serves as an indicator of blood iron-carrying capacity and abnormalities in iron metabolism such as anemia, iron overload, and hemochromatosis. Serum transferrin may also stimulate cell proliferation.
