Cysteine protease ATG4B는 ATG4B 유전자에 의해 코딩되는 효소로, 세포 자가포식(autophagy) 과정의 핵심 조절자입니다. ATG4B는 ATG8 계열 단백질(MAP1LC3, GABARAPL1, GABARAPL2, GABARAP)의 C-말단을 절단하여 글리신 잔기를 노출시킵니다. 이 글리신은 인지질인 phosphatidylethanolamine(PE)과의 결합 및 막 삽입에 필수적이며, 이는 자가포식 과정의 필수 단계입니다. ATG4B는 주로 골격근, 뇌, 심장, 간, 췌장에서 발현됩니다.
