Target Information
The jellyfish Aequorea victoria contains green fluorescent protein (GFP Tag) that emits light in its bioluminescence reaction. GFP is widely used as a reporter for gene expression and as a protein tag in both eukaryotic and prokaryotic systems. As a fusion tag, GFP enables localization studies, protein movement tracking, and analysis of subcellular compartment dynamics.
GFP is a 27 kDa monomeric protein that forms a fluorescent pigment autocatalytically. It absorbs blue light (max 395 nm) and emits green light (peak 508 nm) without the need for cofactors. GFP fluorescence is stable and species-independent, suitable for various applications such as monitoring gene expression, protein localization, protein-protein interactions (yeast two-hybrid), and FRET-based distance measurements.
