Target Information
The cone-rod homeobox-containing gene (CRX) encodes a transcription factor that regulates the expression of multiple photoreceptor genes in the developing retina, including opsin and rhodopsin.
CRX binds the OTX motif (TAATCC/A) upstream of photoreceptor genes. It is also expressed in pinealocytes of the pineal gland, potentially regulating circadian activity through melatonin synthesis gene expression.
Mutations in the CRX gene are associated with cone-rod dystrophy (CORD), Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA), and retinitis pigmentosa (RP). All known mutations produce disease in heterozygotes, typically affecting the homeobox or OTX domains.
