Target Information
ATF6 beta (CREBL1) is a transcription factor involved in the unfolded protein response (UPR) pathway during ER stress.
It can form homodimers or heterodimers with ATF6-alpha, binding to ER stress response elements and interacting with nuclear transcription factor Y to activate UPR target genes.
ATF6 beta is typically located in the endoplasmic reticulum membrane; under stress, its N-terminal domain is cleaved and translocates to the nucleus.
Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified. The protein shares sequence similarity with the Creb/ATF subfamily of the bZip transcription factor superfamily and localizes to both cytoplasm and nucleus.
The gene is located within the MHC class III region on chromosome 6.
