Target Information

Signal-mediated nuclear import and export occur through the nuclear pore complex (NPC), composed of ~50 unique nucleoporins. The 98 kDa nucleoporin (NUP98) is produced via proteolytic cleavage of a 186 kDa precursor, yielding both 98 kDa and 96 kDa nucleoporins localized to the nucleoplasmic side of the NPC. Studies indicate that NUP98 acts as a docking site for transport substrates.
The human NUP98 gene can fuse with other genes following chromosomal translocations in AML and T-ALL. It resides within the imprinted gene domain of 11p15.5, a key tumor-suppressor region associated with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome, Wilms tumor, rhabdomyosarcoma, adrenocortical carcinoma, and various cancers. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
