Target Information

ASAH1 encodes a member of the acid ceramidase family of proteins. Alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants, including a preproprotein processed into alpha and beta subunits that form a mature lysosomal enzyme. This enzyme catalyzes ceramide degradation into sphingosine and free fatty acid. ASAH1 is overexpressed in several human cancers and may play a role in cancer progression. Mutations are associated with Farber lipogranulomatosis and spinal muscular atrophy with progressive myoclonic epilepsy. Related pathways include Innate Immune System and Sphingolipid metabolism.
