Target Information
The encoded protein is a catalytic subunit of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), a heterotrimeric enzyme complex consisting of an alpha catalytic subunit and non-catalytic beta and gamma subunits.
AMPK acts as an energy sensor that regulates cellular metabolism. Upon activation by metabolic stress, AMPK phosphorylates and inactivates acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) and HMG-CoA reductase (HMGCR), key enzymes in fatty acid and cholesterol biosynthesis.
In mouse models, this subunit has been shown to influence insulin sensitivity and maintain myocardial energy homeostasis during ischemia.
