Target Information
This gene encodes a protein that belongs to the cysteine-aspartic acid protease (caspase) family. Sequential activation of caspases plays a key role in the execution phase of cell apoptosis. Caspases are synthesized as inactive proenzymes composed of a prodomain and large and small protease subunits. Activation requires proteolytic processing at conserved internal aspartic residues to form a heterodimeric enzyme. Caspase 4 can cleave and activate its own precursor as well as the caspase 1 precursor. Overexpression of this gene induces apoptosis. Alternative splicing results in distinct isoforms.
