Target Information

CD48 (Blast-1) belongs to the CD2 subset of the immunoglobulin superfamily, including CD2, CD58, CD84, CD150, CD229, CD244, and others. These molecules mediate homotypic or heterotypic adhesion through interactions within the Ig family.
CD48 is a GPI-anchored protein broadly expressed on hematopoietic cells and acts as a high-affinity ligand for 2B4 and a low-affinity ligand for CD2. The 2B4–CD48 interaction among NK and NK-T cells regulates proliferation and activation.
CD48 expression increases in several infectious diseases and is strongly expressed on lymphocytes and monocytes, weakly on granulocytes, but absent on platelets, fibroblasts, epithelium, and endothelium.
It serves as a marker for detecting GPI anchoring defects in paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobulinuria (PNH) and may be involved in allergic airway disease pathology, offering potential therapeutic targets for allergic rhinitis and asthma.
