Target Information
This intronless gene is thought to have originated by retrotransposition of a fully processed PCBP-2 mRNA. PCBP1 and PCBP2 are paralogues that likely arose from gene duplication events. The encoded protein is multifunctional and, together with PCBP2 and hnRNPK, forms major cellular polydomains involved in RNA binding.
PCBP1 and PCBP2 act as translational coactivators of poliovirus RNA via sequence-specific interactions with stem-loop IV of the IRES and promote RNA replication by binding to the 5′-terminal cloverleaf structure.
Additionally, PCBP1 is implicated in the translational control of 15-lipoxygenase mRNA, human Papillomavirus type 16 L2 mRNA, and hepatitis A virus RNA. It also contributes to the formation of a sequence-specific alpha-globin mRNP complex associated with alpha-globin mRNA stability.
