SURF4 유전자는 surfeit 유전자 클러스터 내에 위치하며, 서로 매우 밀접하게 연결된 housekeeping gene들로 구성되어 있습니다. 이 단백질은 다중 추정 막통과 영역을 포함하는 보존된 막단백질로, 진핵세포에서 소포체(ER)와 골지체(Golgi) 간 단백질 수송에 관여하는 COP 단백질 복합체의 일부로 작용합니다. 구체적인 기능은 명확히 규명되지 않았으나, 효모 상동체는 COPII 소포 내 당화된 pro-alpha-factor의 포장에 직접적으로 필요합니다. 이 유전자는 다중 polyadenylation site를 사용하여 전사체 길이 변이를 나타내며, 대체 스플라이싱 전사체의 존재 가능성이 제시되었지만 그 유효성은 확인되지 않았습니다.
