Target Information

Signal-mediated nuclear import and export proceed through the nuclear pore complex (NPC), which consists of approximately 50 unique proteins known as nucleoporins. The 98 kDa nucleoporin is generated by proteolytic cleavage of a 186 kDa precursor protein, resulting in 98 kDa and 96 kDa nucleoporins localized to the nucleoplasmic side of the NPC.

Rat studies indicate that the 98 kDa nucleoporin functions as a docking site nucleoporin for transport substrates. The human NUP98 gene is implicated in chromosomal translocations in acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) and T-cell acute lymphocytic leukemia (T-ALL). It resides within the imprinted gene domain of 11p15.5, a region associated with tumor-suppressor activity. Alterations in this region have been linked to Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome, Wilms tumor, rhabdomyosarcoma, adrenocortical carcinoma, and various cancers. Multiple transcript variants exist due to alternative splicing.
